round chainrings.

Narrow/wide chainrings are used in 1×9, 1×10 and 1×11 MTB drivetrains. Carefully designed teeth have dimensions exactly like the gaps in chain links and allow the chain to sit tighter on the chainring enhancing chain retention.

This solution, in addition of a clutch equipped rear derrailleur (SRAM Type 2 or Shimano Shadow Plus) allows the drivetrain to be used without any additional chain retaining devices (chain guides) in most MTB disciplines.
